Incorporated as a city in 1915, Clearwater is located in the central Pinellas County in western Florida. The region lies on the Pinellas Peninsula, adjacent to St. Petersburg. The city is nestled between the Gulf of Mexico on the west and Tampa Bay on the east and is part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater metropolitan area.
The total area of the city is 97 km² (37 mi²) with land area of 65 km² (25 mi²) and water area of 32 km² (12 mi²), located at latitude of 27.57 North and a longitude of 82.48 West. Roughly 2.7 million people reside in the four-county area making this the second largest metropolitan statistical area of the state. Based on 2005 census, the population is 108,687.

The beach is an island connected to the mainland via the Memorial Causeway bridge. The city proudly hosts a range of popular attractions, restaurants, drug stores, gift shops, grocery outlets, and hotels, apart from a large charter fishing fleet on the West coast of Florida.
